In pea plants, the gene for flower color (P) has two alleles: red (P) and white (p). The gene for pod shape (S) has two alleles: smooth (S) and wrinkled (s). When a homozygous red-flowered, smooth-podded plant (PPSS) is crossed with a homozygous white-flowered, wrinkled-podded plant (ppss), the F1 generation has all red-flowered, smooth-podded plants (PpSs). However, in the F2 generation, there is a 9:3:3:1 ratio of red-flowered, smooth-podded; red-flowered, wrinkled-podded; white-flowered, smooth-podded; and white-flowered, wrinkled-podded plants. This is an example of epistasis, where the gene for pod shape (S) masks the expression of the gene for flower color (P) when both genes are in the homozygous recessive state (ss).
